I was in Princeton, New Jersey in October 2002 and paid a visit to the
mailbox that was likely used to mail some or all of anthrax letters.
The mailbox is located at the corner of Nassau and Bank Streets
[Yahoo Map]
in the downtown area of Princeton right across the street from Princeton
University. Nassau is the main commercial street of downtown Princeton.
The FBI discovered anthrax spores in the original mailbox at this location in late August 2002. It is the only mailbox that anthrax spores have been found in the Trenton area. Speculation is that one or more anthrax letters were mailed from the box and spores leaked from one of the letters. The original box was sent to Maryland for forensics analysis and a new mailbox was put into its place. According to the sticker on the replacement mailbox, mail is picked up at the box at 11 AM and 3 PM, Monday through Saturday. There are no mail pickups on Sundays or holidays. If the perp did use this box to mail his anthrax letters, he had a lot of options to travel to the box. He could have walked or driven of course, but he also could have taken an intercity bus or a train. If the perp walked to the mailbox, is it possible that he either works at Princeton University or had some kind of business there on the mailing dates? The perp could have also taken a bus to do the mailings. The mailbox is only 2 blocks away from the Suburban Transit bus stop. Suburban runs bus service between Princeton and New York City and Princeton and Philadelphia. Buses between Princeton and New York City run approximately every 30 minutes from 6 AM in the morning to 11 PM in the evening [Schedule]. One interesting coincidence that I discovered about the Princeton/New York City bus is that it also stops in Franklin Park and Kendall Park, New Jersey. The Greenbrook School of Kendall Park is about 2 miles away from both of stops [Yahoo Map]. The Greenbrook School might be the Greendale School which appears on the return address of the Daschle and Leahy anthrax letters. The Franklin Park stop is also interesting because it is right at a post office building [Yahoo Map]. The one post office at the stop serves both Franklin Park and Kendall Park. Both towns and Zip codes are listed on the outside of the building. If an outsider sees this building, it is a bit difficult to understand what town he or she is in. Perhaps that's why the Daschle and Leahy return addresses on the wrong town name for the Greenbrook/Greendale School. The Kendall Park stop is at the Kendall Park Shopping Center which is right next to the former offices of Dr. Gerald M. Weisfogel [Yahoo Map]. In fall 2001, the New York Times reported that Dr. Weisfogel had some of kind of serious skin infection in September and October of 2001 which was original diagnosed as a spider bite. The article speculates that the infection might instead be cutaneous anthrax. The exact cause of the infection has never been determined.
The perp could have also traveled by train to the mailbox. The Princeton
train station is about 4 blocks east of the Nassau Street mailbox. The
station is for a small shuttle train that connects up to the main train
line for the northeast corridor that goes between Washington, DC and
Boston, Massachusetts. The shuttle train can be used to take either
Amtrak trains or New Jersey Transit trains.
